Neighbor rescues mother and child, arson suspected

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 06:48 PM EDT

Moundsville police are investigating a fire that happened early Tuesday morning.

Sgt. Don Dewitt said that he believes someone intentionally started the fire.

"The mother and child saw flames and went on their porch and it's the only way out of the apartment," said Dewitt. "There is also evidence an accelerant was used."

It happened at 1316 Center St. in Moundsville around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

A neighbor, that didn't want to be identified, said he had to grab a garden hose and put out the flames.

"There was a rag with something on it, it smelled like lighter fluid," said the neighbor.

No one was injured, but police say they're calling it arson. Police say another fire ended with arson and attempted murder arrest on Friday.

They say they don't believe the two are related, but if you have any information you are asked to call police or the NEWS9 Lauttamus Security Crime Busters Tipline at 800-862-BUST.
