Neighborhood experiences sewage in home during flash flooding

Updated: Wednesday, August 20 2014, 06:45 PM EDT

At least one Wheeling neighborhood was adversely affected by the heavy rain Wednesday morning.

Neighbors in the Mount De Chantal Road area said raw sewage came up through their drains and into their basement.

Tom Leonard says his family was dealing with feces and other debris that came into the house quickly.

"It blew the toilet seat up and was coming out of the toilet," said Tom Leonard. "There was nothing we could do; it was probably a foot of water in five minutes."

The Wheeling Fire Department helped some neighbors pump the water out, but it happened so fast many had to wait for it to recede.

Leonard said it's not the first time he's dealt with flooding.

"Every time it rains we have a problem," said Leonard. "We have flooded at least six times and are not in a flood zone."

Rusty Jebbia, director of Wheeling's Public Works Department, said a new storm drain has been put in, but too much rain was an issue.

The amount of rainfall in a short amount of time caused the problem," said Jebbia.
