Neighbors growing tired of nuisance lot in Mingo Junction

MINGO JUNCTION, Ohio -- Residents in Mingo Junction are worried about a nuisance lot not being taken care of.
It’s a property has become a major concern for neighbors because it has not been cut or taken care of at all in the last 3 years.
Located on Steuben Street, the lot is infested with rodents, snakes and bees. Now neighbors want to see something being done.
Alyssa Glasure has lived next door to the property for 3 years.
"(There are) a lot of animals, a lot of insects,” Glasure said. “My daughter’s allergic to bees. They’re like everywhere. (There is) a lot of poison ivy."
The building that once stood on the land burned down a few years ago, and the property hasn't been touched since.
Village leaders say it can be difficult dealing with properties like this. System Fire Chief and Fire Inspector Jim Raha said they have to research who owns the property, send out letters to the owners, and if the owners don't fix problems, then they can cite them in the county court.
"Then if they go to court, the judge fines them,” Raha said. “But that still doesn't necessarily get the problem taken care of. (It) doesn't make them cut their grass or pick up trash, so it can be a very long and drawn out process for some properties when the owners don't want to cooperate or I can’t find who the owners are."
Glasure said the weeds are actually starting to go up onto her house and she is worried that one of her children will end up getting hurt.
"Raccoons are everywhere, snakes even and that’s pretty bad,” she said. “I have kids everywhere running and playing, and if they get bit that’s terrifying."
Glasure isn’t the only resident in the neighborhood who would like to see something done with the property.
"People are just getting tired of it,” neighbor Michael Roaleson said. “They want it cut, they want it cut. They should get it cut by now."
Village leaders are working on doing something about this property, but it is one of many on their list, so it could take a long time to fix.
