BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio - A bank robbery and a suspect on foot tracked down moments later in what Bridgeport Police Chief Andy Klotz said may be the quickest bank robbery capture in the village to date.
The suspect, 31-year-old James Oberman, allegedly robbed Citizens Bank on Howard Street in late May and was nabbed minutes later in the Boydsville area. The cash was also recovered at the scene.
It's a case proves just how well the different law enforcement agencies in Belmont County work together.
NEWS9 was able to track down and share exclusive footage of the entire scene.
In a 911 call, a teller told police a man came into the bank wearing sweatpants, a hooded sweatshirt and a ball cap.
"The man came into the bank with a small handgun, pointed the handgun at her and told her to give him all of the money," Klotz said.
Reports indicated he proceeded to point the gun at a female employee, demanding she hand over the money.
The employee gave the armed robber the cash, and he fled the bank on foot, headed west through an alley.
"As the male fled the bank, he did throw the weapon," Klotz said. "We were able to take that weapon into evidence."
Klotz said Bridgeport, Bellaire, and Martins Ferry Police, along with the Belmont County Sheriff's Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol teamed up for a successful, speedy conclusion.
"All the response made everyone's job easier," Klotz said. "The officers in the area were able to make a quick apprehension on the suspect."
Oberman's charges include aggravated robbery and weapons under disability of a previous conviction, which was a bank robbery in Jefferson County.
