Ohio County BOE elects new president

Updated: Tuesday, July 8 2014, 08:20 AM EDT

Three recently elected board members were sworn in tonight during the Ohio County Board of Education’s meeting.

Current board member Shane Mallett was nominated and elected to be the new board president.

Mallett said he is honored and hopes to make the schools better than what they are today.

“Just very honored and being the child of two school teachers, it’s kind of a surreal experience,” Mallett said.

One of the first things Mallett plans to do is address the budget carry items from the past four years because the current board has yet to address them.

“One is looking at a tax break for the taxpayers of Ohio County, they’ve been very kind and generous to us by giving us these bond levies,” Mallett said. “The other thing is our employees haven’t received a county pay raise from the county in about eight years so it’s something else we’d like to address.”

Superintendent Diana Vargo is looking forward to working with Mallett.

“Mr. Mallet’s focus has always been improving student achievement, working with our students and offering them the best opportunities,” Vargo said.

Returning board member Christine Carter and newly elected board member Tim Birch were both sworn in tonight as well.

Board members say they are excited to help improve the schools of Ohio County and are looking forward to the start of the school year.
