ONLY ON 9: Neighbors outraged after shooting

Updated: Monday, August 25 2014, 05:21 PM EDT
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – After another shooting in Steubenville on Sunday night, neighbors are fed up, including one man who showed NEWS9 where stray bullets hit his home and went straight into his daughter’s room.
"This is what my wife and my girls had to look at this morning when they came out,” resident Michael Merritt said, pointing to a blood-spattered sidewalk. “This is what they saw.”
It didn't quite compare to what happened Sunday night inside Merritt's home at the corner of Maryland Avenue and McDowell.
“There had been a lot of shots fired in the neighborhood,” Merritt said. “One actually hit the wall in her room. It exploded all the drywall by her bed and she was scared to death."
Merritt's daughter was sitting on her bed, reviewing paperwork for Franciscan University.
“School just started; we were really excited,” Merritt said. “How do you send someone off to college knowing full and well their life could have been ended the night before? It was that close. It was that close."
Merritt continues to count his blessings his two daughters and wife were not hurt. It was a different story for two juveniles who were shot outside home. One was transported by ambulance to Weirton Hospital. The other was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital by medical helicopter.
Within about 3 hours, police had two people in custody. At this time, charges are still pending against 26-year-old Michael Snyder and 20-year-old Malik Young of Steubenville.
Despite the fact that two suspects are behind bars, “There's been buzz already that there will be retribution from this,” Merritt said.
And neighbors aren't yet at ease.
"What do you do, fight or flight?” Merritt asked. “We'll stay and fight; we need to fight for what we have.”
Both Snyder and Young are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
