HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. -- A controversial smoking ban took center stage in Hancock County on Wednesday night as people had a chance to voice their opinions on the proposed Clean Air Act.
The Hancock County Health Board accepted a draft of the Clean Air act on July 8. Nearly to 100 people were in attendance for the public meeting. The proposed law is an effort to have smoke free public venues in the county, including gaming facilities, restaurants, bars, hotels, and fairs.
The ban also includes setting up designated smoking areas outside of those venues. Citizens on both sides of the ban expressed their concerns with jobs and health, being two of the biggest.
On one side ...
"I think it would be very uh helpful to the economy around here," Weirton resident Eric Carper said. "I personally know of a lot of people who will not go to these - (Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort) or to any of these other video lottery places because they don't want to deal with the smoke."
And on the other ...
"I really hope that the board decides some type of compromise before they have the power to wipe out a large number of jobs in this area," said Linda Riley, who works at Mountaineer, the county's No. 1 employer.
The public comment period ends Aug. 11. If you were unable to attend the meeting Wednesday night, you have until then to send written comments.
