Robotic hysterectomy being done at Weirton Medical Center

Updated: Monday, August 25 2014, 05:59 PM EDT
WEIRTON, W.Va. -- A quicker recovery and less scarring -- those are two of the benefits of a procedure now available at Weirton Medical Center.
Doctor Rachel Gilman is one of the first in the region to offer the single-site hysterectomy. The board certified gynecologist has performed the most robotic-assisted surgeries in the Weirton-Pittsburgh corridor.
In the procedure, a small incision is made through the belly button. It offers better cosmetic results and less pain for the patient.
“Patients are very surprised at how little pain they have,” Gilman said. “They wake up, feel well, they go home that day or the following day, which is really nice for woman who work and can't afford to be down and out.”
Gilman said two of the procedures are already scheduled for Tuesday morning, and she anticipates at having a few each week going forward.
