Smithsonian's 'Hometown Teams' exhibit being set up in Weirton

Updated: Wednesday, August 13 2014, 05:54 PM EDT
HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. - A new way to see how hometown sports teams shaped America is the focus of a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian.
It's called "Hometown Teams," and it's being set up in Weirton at the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center.
"We have all the championship teams from Weir High School, Madonna High School," said Dennis Jones of the museum and cultural center. "We even have some (from) Brooke High school because we had some residents of Weirton who went to Brooke.
"A good variety of displays here," said Weirton Mayor George Kondik. "One of our bigger displays here is on the Weir High Band from the 1960s."
Kondik, who will be attending the opening event of the exhibit, looks forward to seeing his town on display.
"When you come back to the museum in Weirton and you see it, and you remember all of it, it's just really great," he said. "This is something everyone in Weirton should come and see in the next 6 weeks."
The Smithsonian Institute contributed its own sports memorabilia for the event. Jones believes those items, in combination with the displays of local sports he made and assembled himself, will be enough to interest everyone.
"It's good for everybody, no matter what age," Jones said. "I know the older people will love to come in and see the history of their high school, their local high school. Many people will see themselves in these displays."
If that's not enough, during the 6-week event, the themes will change each day to highlight different parts of Weirton's culture and history.
"Come on down," Jones said. "It's going to be sports heaven here at the Weirton Area Museum"
The exhibit opens Aug. 17 and runs through Sept. 27. For more information, visit
