Strike vote in the works at Buckeye Local

Updated: Tuesday, July 22 2014, 06:29 PM EDT
RAYLAND, Ohio – David Green is a custodian at Buckeye local, and he's been there for 25 years. He says he loves his job, likes the kids, wants to stick around, but there's a problem.
"It makes me feel sad,” he said. “This is sad, sad that it's come to this."
A strike vote was on the docket at the Rayland Fire Department at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Eight members of the Union Ohio Association of Public School Employees who work at Buckeye Local were to vote whether or not they wanted to accept an offer that was presented to them last week.
If they don't accept, they are prepared to go on strike.
"The Board of the Education has said that the cost of insurance is just rising so high that they have to do something,” Buckeye Local superintendent Mark Miller said.
“So what they have done to combat some of the prices? They are putting in a deductible."
Teachers and administrators voted yes to accept that deductible in January.
For a single, they'd have to pay $500. For a family the cost is $1,000.
But bus drivers, cooks, custodians, secretaries, aides and maintenance don't like the offer they've been given.
"The OAPSE Union, the highest that they would have to pay is $200 for a single and $400 for a family," Miller said.
Even with a 25 cent pay rise this year and next year in place for those workers, they say it's still not enough.
"We don't have the money to pay that big deductible,” he said.
“Nobody wants to go on strike,” Miller said. “We just hope that they would come back to the table and do the right thing for the children."
