CLARINGTON, Ohio --

Union leaders are working to help hundreds of Ormet workers who remain off the job this holiday season as a result of the Ormet shutdown in October.

A toy and food drive was held Monday at USW Local 5724 in Clarington.

"Today we're trying to give back some of the monies that have been donated to us by individuals, organizations, other locals, numerous people and we're taking that money and we have put it toward the food and the gifts -- trying to help out a little bit around the holidays," said Tom Byers of USW Local 5724.

A couple of nonprofit groups acted as a liaison between the union and local grocery stores.

"Our United Way, along with the United Way of Guernsey County, has been asked to help with the food and toy distribution," said George Smoulder, director of United Way Upper Ohio Valley.

Families affected by the Ormet shutdown that weren't able to make it out on Monday can come Tuesday to the USW Union Hall in Clarington.
