Update: House fire, water shut off in Bellaire

Updated: Tuesday, August 5 2014, 12:09 PM EDT
BELLAIRE, Ohio -- Water is shut off for residents in West Bellaire after village officials say a hydrant went out of commission while crews were fighting an overnight fire.
The homeowner said he left for Circle K early Tuesday morning, and when he came back, what he first thought was fog turned out to be smoke pouring out the bedroom window of his house located on 3rd Avenue.
By the time crews had put out the fire, soffit was melted and dangling froma roof, a door was charred, windows were broken and insulation was piled on the porch. Most importantly, though, the homeowner escaped unharmed along with both of his dogs and even his beloved guitar.
Investigators believe the fire was mainly concentrated in, and potentially ignited in, the living room.
The newly formed Bellaire Volunteer Fire Department and the Ohio River and Western Fire District (OR&W) responded around 2:30 a.m.
In their urgent quest to beat the blaze, part of a hydrant broke -- fortunately in the on position – so it didn't affect firefighters dousing the home with water. But it did leave an entire section of West Bellaire without water.
"We have a lot of old hydrants in town,” Village Administrator Dan Marling said. “Sometimes when there's a fire that does happen."
Marling said Tuesday morning water restoration was a work in progress.
"We're actually going to change two hydrants while the water is off,” he said. “We have a contractor coming in for one, and we're going to do the other ourselves. So we expect the water to be back on mid-to-late afternoon and we thank the people for their patience."
Residents will have little no water pressure while work continues. All of West Bellaire is under a 24-hour boil order.
