WEIRTON, W.Va. -- Elderly people across the nation are becoming victims of Grandparent Scams. These scams happen when fraudsters impersonate a grandchild in distress and beg for cash.

The scams are especially becoming common in the Steubenville and Weirton area.

Mary Majorif of Weirton was almost scammed into sending $1,000 to the Dominican Republican to save, who she thought, was her grandson.

The impersonator who called Majoriff said that he was her grandson and he that he was arrested in the Dominican Republic while he was driving in a car with friends who were carrying drugs.

Mary did not fall into the trap; instead she hung up the phone and called her daughter.

She urges others in similar situations to do the same.
