Drivers can expect delays in Weirton in the coming weeks

Updated: Tuesday, May 27 2014, 05:44 PM EDT
WEIRTON, W.Va. -- A $2.5 million road project is going to be causing some major delays from the Ohio River to Exit 2, Downtown Weirton, starting on Thursday.
This change is going to cause 10-15 minute delays, but with traffic it could stretch into hours of backups for the next 6-8 weeks.
Construction crews were setting up the detour signs Tuesday and getting ready for the project.
Crews will close the ramp from W.Va. 2 northbound onto US 22. Instead of flowing directly into West Virginia, traffic will first have to detour across the Veterans Memorial Bridge into Ohio.
“This Thursday we're gonna be closing (W.Va.) 2 northbound on U.S. 22 ramp and detouring traffic back across the bridge west bound to Ohio 7, and turning it around and bringing it back across the bridge to drop traffic off into downtown Weirton,” District 6 Construction Engineer Danny Sikora said.
The ramp going south to W.Va. 2 will be closed and that traffic will be detoured to Harmon Creek Exit (Exit 3) and turning that around. Another ramp is closed coming out of Weirton to go W.Va. 2 south onto US 22 westbound and that is being detoured to Harmon Creek. There will be stop signs for safety because the traffic moves too fast.
