Hancock Brooke Ohio Counties Victim Assistance Program asking for help

Updated: Monday, April 7 2014, 05:44 PM EDT
Rich, poor, young, old, male, female -- anyone can be a victim of crime. For years, an assistance program has been helping those victims in Hancock, Brooke and Ohio counties.
Now, they need your help.
Over the past several years, the program has been getting a $15,000 grant to help with counseling and assisting victims of crimes. That money was not awarded this year, and now the Hancock Brooke Ohio Counties Victim Assistance Program is looking for other ways to make sure they can still help those in need.
“We need that money for the victims because a lot of times, these crimes happen against the victims with at no fault on their own. So we're hoping that we can continue to support them," said Michelle Wuyak, a coordinator for the program in Hancock County.
The program recently teamed up with the Salvation Army in Weirton as a way to help make do with the lower income. The partnership is also helping the Salvation Army.
"When people give, we want to make the best use of the things people give. We give those out to our clients and to the folks we assist. And when we have extra or we have things we can't particularly use, we try to find a way to use those in another agency in the community," said Maj. Sue Dewan.
“I think it's just indicative of the number of people who are trying to be a resource for those who need it,” added Wuyak.
The VAP is also hosting a benefit dinner at the Moose lodges in Wellsburg and Weirton this Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7p.m. to raise additional funds.
If you want to donate or need assistance, you can contact Michelle Wuyak in Hancock County at 304-564-4277, Brandon Kaufman in Brooke County at (304) 737-2515 or Jennifer Gruber in Ohio County at 304-234-3896.
