Hancock County audit reveals missing funds

Updated: Thursday, December 5 2013, 06:42 PM EST

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va - A recent audit conducted by the West Virginia State Auditor's Office of the Hancock County Parks and Recreation Board has found that the board has been unable to account for thousands of dollars in its budget.

Among that money was over $14,000 for goods and services at Kennedy Marina, which could not be traced to back a bank deposit.

In addition, the audit also revealed that in 2011, employees of the board appeared to receive over $26,000 of compensation in excess of reported state and federal net wages that were reported to the IRS.

The state audit concluded that "the board failed to maintain adequate financial records and we were unable to obtain sufficient competent evidence supporting the revenues and expenses of the financial activities of the board."
