Hancock County ready for emergency smartphone app

Updated: Wednesday, May 28 2014, 06:39 PM EDT
HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. – Hancock County residents are gearing up for the launch an emergency information app for smartphones.
When it happens – and officials says that could be sometime in June -- county residents will have access to the very latest emergency alerts at the palm of their hands.
The app, called Heads Up, is already is a huge success in Huntington, W.Va. The app includes school closings, road closings, boil alerts, power outages and more.
“The benefit is information that they need from schools, from law enforcement, from water departments, etc.” Hancock County Sherriff Ralph Fletcher said. “We're able to get this information out immediately."
The Huntington app last fall and already has more than 35,000 downloads.
Before “Heads Up” is ready for people to use in Hancock County, the Mayor of New Cumberland and other officials are at the John D. Rockefeller Career Center learning how to input alert emergency information into the app to get it to the public.
The two-day training ends Thursday. The app can be downloaded on iPhones and androids.
