Local chiropractor sentenced for health care fraud

A local chiropractor was sentenced to 18 months in prison for health care fraud and tax evasion.


Joseph J. Yurigan, 62, of New Alexandria, Pa., was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Wheeling by Judge Frederick P. Stamp Jr.


Yurigan pleaded guilty on Oct. 9, 2012 to one count of heath care fraud by submitting a fraudulent claim to a health care benefit program. He also pleaded guilty to one count of income tax evasion for the calendar year 2008.


Yurigan is a doctor of chiropractic medicine and licensed to practice in West Virginia. He operated two chiropractic clinics, the Weirton Chiropractic Clinic and the Wheeling Spine Center.


As part of his plea, Yurigan must make restitution of $513,373.92 for the health care violation and $322,692.03 for the tax evasion violation.


After he is released from prison, Yurigan was ordered to be on two years of supervised release.


According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Yurigan is free on bond and will self-report to the designated federal institution on Oct. 7.
