Nearly completed road work lauded in Weirton

Updated: Wednesday, July 9 2014, 04:45 PM EDT
WEIRTON, W.Va. -- For weeks, residents and business owners have been voicing their concerns and frustrations the traffic construction on U.S. 22 near Weirton has been causing drivers.
But those frustrations have slowly been disappearing as road work is near completion and exits into downtown are finally re-opening.
Even though it did cause headaches for business owners, some are glad they're dealing with it now instead of later.
“Along this corridor, we have several businesses that we own and we were affected somewhat, but I think it was worth it because of their effort," said Tom Banketas of Orion Development.
Banketas has been impressed by how quickly crews worked. He knows they aren't quite finished yet, and it's certainly not an easy job, but it will be worth the irritation it's been causing drivers.
“The bridge, if I’m not mistaken is 25 years old, and this is the first major work that is being done that I can remember,” he said. “Cutting through concrete and steel and the work they did as fast as they did it, I think it's just fantastic.”
Construction and detours did cause Banketas and his business some inconvenience, as it did for others, but the way the West Virginia Department of Highways, engineers, and their crews worked on it, inconvenience for him was kept to a minimum.
He says it's an important interchange and work of this nature normally takes much longer than it has.
"And we should thank everyone including law enforcement on both sides because they were out there all day long,” Banketas said.
The WVDOH said it is wrapping up the ramp work and will be finished within the next few weeks.
But the entire project won't wrap up until September.
