New Cumberland targets nuisance properties

Updated: Monday, June 23 2014, 05:45 PM EDT

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. (AP) -- New Cumberland's City Council is considering requiring jail time for residents who refuse to clean up nuisance properties.
A proposed amendment to the city's nuisance law calls for up to two days in jail for first-time offenders. Two-time offenders would face up to five days in jail, and repeat offenders could spend up to 30 days behind bars.
The current penalty is a $100 fine for every 48 hours that the nuisance exists.
The council gave the amendment a first reading on Friday during a special session.
