Northern Panhandle drug court to hold graduation

Updated: Thursday, March 20 2014, 11:44 AM EDT

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Brent D. Benjamin is honoring two graduates of one of the Northern Panhandle's drug courts.

Officials said the ceremony was scheduled for Thursday morning in New Cumberland.

The drug court is a hybrid adult drug court and DUI Court serving the three northern-most counties of West Virginia: Hancock, Brooke and Ohio.

The Northern Panhandle Adult Drug Court and DUI Court was implemented in August 2005 and was the first adult drug court in West Virginia. It originally served Brooke, Hancock, Ohio, Marshall, Tyler and Wetzel counties but what split into two circuits in September 2009.

Proponents of drug courts say they are much cheaper than incarcerating offenders and graduates are less likely to offend again.
