WEIRTON, W.Va. --

Officials confirmed a 15-year-old girl was arrested on allegations she took a loaded handgun into Weir High School.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon, officials with the Weirton Police Department and Hancock County Schools told NEWS9 on Thursday.

The teen, who is a student at the Weir High, was arrested and charged with possession of a deadly weapon.

Officials said the investigation as initiated by another individual who notified the school prevention resource officer stationed at Weir High. The resource officer acted quickly on the information and recovered a loaded handgun.

When asked if parents were notified, Superintendent Sue Smith told NEWS9 they were not.

In a statement provided to NEWS9, Smith said, "Parents were not notified because we did not believe the students were in danger. Our administrators followed protocol and right now what took place is under investigation."

School system administrators and the police department are conducting investigations. Because the suspect is a juvenile, her name is not being released.
