WEIRTON, W.Va. --

A raccoon found in Weirton has tested positive for rabies.

The determination has been made by the Hancock County Health Department.

Public health officials advise residents to use caution if they observe an animal displaying strange behavior, in particular nocturnal animals.

They advise giving a wide berth to animals that are staggering when walking or animals that show no fear being around humans.

State officials have launched a vaccination attempt to curb the spread of raccoon rabies.

Public health officials have been working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to distribute baits with the vaccine across a wide corridor stretching from the Northern Panhandle to the southern coalfields.
