Traffic delays here to stay on U.S. 22 near Weirton

Updated: Friday, April 25 2014, 06:37 PM EDT

Traffic nightmares are about to get even scarier.
Officials have said they're working around the clock to repair existing concrete pavement and joints along U.S. 22, where there was long traffic backup Thursday.
With the entire project schedule for completion in September, they are hoping to complete the majority of the work in the next 12 weeks.
The project will be completed in three phases. The first was closing the passing lanes to make repairs. Phase 2 includes repairs to the traveling lane, and the third will include work on interchange ramps.
“But the ramps, when we start work on that will probably be the most intense,” said West Virginia Division of Highways spokesperson Carrie Bly. “It's hard for us to keep the ramps open because of safety issues. They're not wide enough to have our workers and vehicles on the ramps at the same time.”
Bly said they have been seeing traffic delays increase between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m.
On Friday, project managers met to discuss how to handle future closures after Thursday’s traffic backup.
“When we have to do ramp closures, maybe we could do night work,” Bly said. “But it doesn't appear we  are going to be able to do that either because it comes down to money that will run up the cost of doing night work.”
In the meantime, officials with DOH are asking for patience as they work to make the repairs.
“The reason we have to do full lane closures is to protect the workers who are going to be working on the pavement there and we actually have to put up concrete barriers,” Bly said.
Bly anticipated construction on the actual concrete restoration and joint repair is expected to begin next week.
