Weirton, WV

Weirton City Council is discussing an energy improvement project for city buildings.

The project would replace old lighting technology, heating systems, boilers and windows in buildings like the city municipal building and the Millsop Community Center.

Traffic lights throughout the city would also be replaced with new LED lights.

The project will not cost more than $2.29 million and is expected to be complete by the end of 2014.

“The energy savings, the lower utility bills, the lower operation maintenance cost – and we are doing these capital improvements now instead of waiting for an [emergency],” Ward 7 Councilman Terry Weigel said.

Weigel said the savings should allow the project to pay for itself over the course of the next 15 years.
