Weirton, WV

Residents in Weirton will soon have to shell out more the get their garbage picked up.

City Council held a public hearing Tuesday night and discussed a sanitation rake hike. It would be the first rate hike in 13 years.

Individual residents will pay 96 cents more per week. The money will go toward disposal fees, labor, equipment and the city’s recycling program.

“Can you imagine the fuel costs 13 years ago? They certainly weren’t what they are today. It’s a service that people want. We should be paying for that service. The rates need to reflect that,” Ward 7 Councilman Terry Weigel said.

He said he would like to see rates adjusted yearly.

The proposal must go through one more reading in December. After that, residents can expect the change in the next billing cycle.
