Weirton Medical Center experienced a major financial turnaround this year, going from more than a decade of operating in the red to a profit.

In the fiscal year ending in June of 2012, the hospital experienced a loss of $9.3 million. This past year, the hospital experienced a profit of $871,000 dollars. The difference between the years is about $10.2 million.

Director of Communications Kelli McCoy said the hospital added new programs, specialties and physicians. She said that led to a 30 percent growth in the volume of patients coming to the hospital.

“The physicians are the backbone of what we do along with our staff. There have been tough times at this hospital over the last decade and we like to think those tough times are behind us. We want to thank our staff and physicians. Without them, we would not be here,” McCoy said.
