Beetham unseats Washington in Harrison Prosecutor race

Updated: Tuesday, May 6 2014, 11:38 PM EDT

HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio -- A razor thin margin, indeed.
Just 24 votes separated the two republican candidates Owen Beetham and Michael Washington in the race for Harrison County Prosecutor.
Beetham pocketed 550 votes, as compared to 526 for Washington in the tight race.
Election officials say there are 12 republican provisional ballots left to be tallied and there are also 25 absentee ballots. Of course with those absentee ballots, there is no guarantee they are Republican ballots, or that they voted for prosecutor. Officials say a margin of six would be required for an automatic recount. That's about one half of a percent.
"We don't really ever know how things are going to come out," Beetham said. "Obviously both of us had some supporters in our camp, and we had a pretty good day good of weather in a good turnout. Can I say I'm surprised? I always thought that it would be a close race. My opponent has been at the job as an assistant for a number of years, and I'm a newer coming attorney."
You may recognize the name Beetham. His father Mark is the judge for the County Court and his grandfather was the County Prosecutor.
News9 reached out to Washington, as did Beetham. Neither call was returned late Tuesday night.
Election officials said Washington can request, and pay, for a recount,  regardless of whether the margin is six. But as of late Tuesday, it was unclear whether or not that will happen.
The winner, of course, will unopposed this November.
