Bikers remembered at 21st annual Motorcyclist Memorial rededication

Updated: Saturday, May 24 2014, 10:18 PM EDT

More than 1,000 gathered at the American Legion in Hopedale for the 21st annual Motorcyclist Memorial rededication weekend.

A memorial ceremony was held on Saturday to remember those whose names are on the Motorcyclist Memorial wall.

“Most of the names on here are bikers and females that have lost their lives as a result of a motorcycle accident but we also have avid bikers that had health reasons through their life,” Brian Straka, chairman of the Motorcyclist Memorial board said.

Scott Twitchell from Upstate New York recently lost two of his close friends Mike Lake and Bill Cox; their names are now on the memorial.

Twitchell said Lake was an avid traveler, and Cox was like a brother to him and his bike was his life.

“He got sick and passed away in March and we decided to dedicate a spot for him,” Twitchell said.

“Our friend Mike Lake passed away a year ago this weekend actually…kind of a short life and some friends of ours happened to find out about this,” Twitchell said.

The weekend is full of camping, motorcycles and reminiscing to celebrate the lives of their fellow bikers.

“We got a whole bunch of friends on this wall behind us, every one of them loved the road, loved being free and living this lifestyle,” Twitchell said.

During the ceremony college scholarships were awarded to senior high school students who got to read their winning essays and display their artwork during the ceremony.
