Harrison county homicide suspects caught

Updated: Sunday, April 6 2014, 09:30 PM EDT

CADIZ, Ohio -  Two murder suspects on the run for more than a week were captured Saturday night by authorities in Florida.

Matthew Dowdel and Eve Irene Kelley were taken into custody after a foot chase. According to investigators, police spotted the stolen white Trail Blazer in Daytona Beach around 8:30 p.m. and initiated a traffic stop.

A pursuit ensued, which ended with both suspects fleeing on foot and then being taken into custody by police.

"We've been nonstop it's been 24 hours a day, seven days a week since day one,” Detective Bill Jones of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office said.

The SUV the suspects are believed to have stolen in the Ohio Valley was located thanks to a tipster in Florida and a foot chase by police in Daytona Beach Shores.

"I just appreciate the help and it is just something that we weren't really prepared for but we wanted to make sure that we handled it right and make sure that they get prosecuted and convicted for what they've done,” Cadiz Police Chief Ryan McCann said.

On Saturday night, officials announced the charges against the two. Dowdel is charged with murder and Kelley is charged with complicity to commit murder.

"Now we look forward to presenting our case to the grand jury we feel confident in the case that we have and hopefully we will have presented to the grand jury by the end of this week,” Jones said.

The charges come eight days after Joe Strother was found dead at Sally Buffalo Park in Cadiz.

Investigators are still not releasing details about his death.

"We should have that waiting on a final report and hopefully we should have that by the beginning of this week,” Jones said.

Officials say they will process the vehicle in Florida and then transfer it back to Ohio sometime next week.

"The biggest thing is for the family, I mean you notify the family of bad news so often, you're notifying families that they've lost love ones and tragedies,” Jones said. “It’s nice to let the family know that you got the suspects in custody and give them closure.”

Dowdel and Kelly must go through an extradition hearing before being returned to Ohio.

"Once they see that judge in Florida they will tell him whether they are going to waive extradition or fight extradition,” Jones said. “If they fight extradition, then we have a process here in Ohio that we have to go through, so the prosecutor’s office will handle that where we will obtain a governor’s warrant. On a governor’s warrant we will bring them back on that and they will face the judge in Harrison County on the homicide charge."
