HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio – Who says cold temperatures can’t be fun?

Piedmont resident Carrie Rogers and her 5-year-old daughter Jayda have a tradition where they’ve been building snow sculptures every winter.

But these aren’t your average snow sculptures, ranging from cupcakes to deer to dinosaurs and beyond. It started four years ago when Rogers went outside to build a snowman but lost daylight and had to call it a night.

The next day, they went outside and the snowman looked like a cupcake, so she created a candle to go on top of the cupcake. Now every year for her daughter’s birthday, they build snow sculptures.

“I sketch it out on a paper, and then from there I start creating it,” Rogers said. “It may flop sometimes and I have to stop. I usually never give up because it’s something I want to do.”

Rogers lives on a hill so unless the sculptures are huge like the buck she built, they’re hard to see. Posting photos on the Internet is one way, but next year she wants to start building them at her brother’s house, who lives down the hill, so more people can see the sculptures.

“My friends say I should start going to people’s house and (have) them pay me,” Rogers said. “That wouldn’t be enjoyable.

“I have friends in Japan and (near) Niagara Falls, and they (ask), “What’s Carrie going to build?’ ”

Rogers has done 12 snow sculptures that usually take a couple of days. She uses anything around the house to help such as pots, pans and bowls. She uses food coloring, spray paint, or bath tablets to get the color. She’s also used yarn or wigs for full hair.

Most importantly, she uses snow sculptures to remember loved ones. She recently made a dragonfly in memory of her cousin, who was lost to breast cancer.
