Water, mud force officials to close busy highway

Updated: Wednesday, September 25 2013, 11:51 PM EDT

Harrison County, OH --

One lane will be closed on U.S. Route 22 in the Eastbound direction in Harrison County until Thursday morning.

Officials say the initially closed the entire road around 6 p.m. after they received reports that the road was pulsating when water emerged from below it.

It happened about a half a mile past the State Route 151 exit for Jewitt. Officials with Mark West say they were attempting to complete a horizontal directional boar and that's what caused the mud and slurry to come up through the pavement.

The closure was precautionary and officials with ODOT say they will keep one lane closed to allow the company to complete the process.

"Mud is coming up out of the road and it would be slick,” said ODOT’s Harrison County Manager Chris Wood. “Mark West has brought equipment out to keep the mud off the road."

"We'll take care of all the repairs,” said Mark West Construction Manager Walter Gibson. “We'll go back and talk about it and make sure we get everybody ready and we'll come out and get with the department of highway and whenever they give us a window we'll take care of it."

All the liquid has been contained.
