Crews still working fatal semi-truck crash scene in Jefferson County

Updated: Wednesday, June 25 2014, 05:30 PM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- While police are still investigating what caused a fatal crash along State Route 43 between Amsterdam and East Springfield on Tuesday night, crews were out repairing most of the damage that was done Wednesday.
Pronounced dead at the scene was 26-year-old David Walls of Elizabeth, Pa. His semi went off the road, hit a guardrail, and came to a stop about 30 feet down a hill.
"I came home last night about quarter to 11, sat down to watch the news and I saw them talking about it,” said the owner of that land where accident occurred. “When they showed the pictures, I was like, ‘That's my property."
The semitrailer struck a power pole and some trees before landing down the hill.
The property owners says he is concerned because diesel fuel leaked out. And he doesn't want it to get into a stream that is nearby.
"I knew I needed to come down and see what happened, but I didn't realize how big of a mess it really is," he said.
Crews began cleaning up that mess Wednesday.
A guard rail that was completely smashed in from the accident was fixed. The truck, however, remains buried under trees.
The owner says there aren't too many accidents that happen on the road, but he does remember one that happened in the same spot 15 years ago.
"A car came up the hill and hit that ramp and went airborne and landed on that hillside over there upside down,” he said. “The car was white and there was snow. I think it took them four days to find the car."
The road will be closed beginning at 8:30 Thursday morning between Amsterdam and East Springfield for accident cleanup.
