Crooks caught red handed trying to sell stolen goods

Updated: Tuesday, May 27 2014, 06:26 PM EDT
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- When catching crooks red handed, there are usually two ingredients.
1) You need residents who aren't afraid to get involved and call police.
2) You need police who are one step ahead of the person or persons who are committing the crime.
That is how an arrest happened at a scrap yard along Ohio 7 on Tuesday afternoon.
Police say two men were arrested after it was discovered that what they were trying to sell was actually stolen from a home along Lincoln Ave., just a short time before.
Investigators said the police were not only ahead of the crooks when they went to the scrap yard, but residents along Lincoln were also vigilant and ahead of the two when they were able to describe what was removed.
It was those two elements combined that landed Robert James Smith and Joseph Miller, both from Steubenville, behind bars. Police said they face an array of charges, including burglary and possession of stolen property.
Officials with the Jefferson County Jail have confirmed that there is no bond. Right now both these men are scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
