Employee OK after work truck falls through bridge

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 10:39 AM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Engineers had been working a bridge along County Road 53 near Township Road 218 in Jefferson County for months.
For them, Wednesday was unlike any other day, though.
Construction came to a halt after one of the county’s truck’s back end went straight through the bridge with an employee in it.
The Jefferson County Engineering Department was naturally shaken up after seeing this.
The employee was rushed to the hospital where he checked out OK.
“I’m just glad that our employee wasn’t seriously injured,” County Engineer Jim Branagan said. “That’s really the most important thing to us.”
Branagan said it isn't the first time the county has had work to do at this location.
“We did some emergency repairs last year on it so we wanted to finish the rest of the repairs this year,” Branagan said. “Our crews have been doing prep work and start working on the bridge.”
The bridge was already losing its guardrail and the gabian stone that was being used for the retaining wall is now in Yellow Creek.
“We'll be getting a crane brought in to pull it out and we need to do some prep work and the bridge will remained closed until we get it fixed,” Branagan said.
Drivers will have to take a detour around the bridge until they fix new problems and the ones they were already working on. That could take months.
