Groups come together to stop hunger

Updated: Friday, June 6 2014, 06:59 PM EDT
YORKVILLE, Ohio -- You've seen commercials about hunger on other continents and in different states. But did you know that right here in the Ohio Valley, there are families struggling every day to put food on the table?
In southern Jefferson County, dozens of different groups have come together to stop it.
For one day each month this summer, Yorkville Municipal Building will be filled with 10,000 pounds of fresh produce. It’s vegetables, fruit, dairy products, and baked goods that will be divided between 200-300 different families.
The free produce market serves eight different communities from Yorkville to Rayland to Glen Robbins and is organized by dozens of different people from local churches, government agencies, and community groups.
It is it is not only free for those who need it, but it's free to all of those communities because every single pound of produce is provided by the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
"Our first one was May 31st and we had a smaller crowd than usual,” event coordinator Gloria Closser said. “But when I talk to Mid-Ohio they, told me that happens on the very first one so I would imagine once the word gets out more we will have more. There is a definite need in the area we have a lot of senior citizens we have a lot of young families that can use the produce."
This will be the 6th year this market has been available to the community. And it's open one day a month through November.
The next one will be from 10 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Saturday June 21. If you need additional information, stop by the Yorkville Municipal Building.
