STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- If you’re a Jefferson County employee and you’re injured on the job, the company handling your claim will be changing.
On Thursday at their weekly meeting, commissioners made a motion to select 1-888-OHIOCOMP to handle workers comp claims for county workers.
The announcement was made after a brief presentation by the company.
“If you manage those cases correctly, that employee is brought back to work at full capacity, and obviously a reduced cost,” Commissioner Dave Maple said.
The average medical costs for active lost-time claims are $40,000 a month. With $147,000 lost-time claims in the state, that money adds up.
“A person who's injured needs the best care as quickly as possible,” said Dan Neubert of 1-888-OHIOCOMP. “And that's for the recovery of the injured worker. For the employer, every day that the employee misses work, it's going to cost them about a $1,000 in future premiums.”
Neubert said the best way to get injured workers back on the job is to divert as many resources to track patient progress as possible.
“And that allows us to do a little more hands-on case management, and follow up of treatment to make sure people are getting the services they need to recover quicker,” Neubert said.
Commissioners believed the presentation and the results the company showed would allow them to more efficiently handle cases and save money in the process.
“To not manage those cases, and to not manage your workers comp program is not really being a good steward with money, so those problems will just escalate,” Neubert said.
