Police believe they have their man in Wintersville shooting

Updated: Wednesday, May 14 2014, 06:46 PM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Investigators said they have already identified and arrested the man they believe pulled the trigger in an overnight shooting in Wintersville.
Interest moved from the crime scene to the Jefferson County Jail because that’s where much of the action happened Wednesday.
Investigators have been pouring over evidence, conducting interviews, and working around the clock to gather new information.
It was that hard work that led to the arrest of a 26-year-old believed to be the shooter early this morning after a shocking scene unfolded for those living at the Ridgewood Apartments in Wintersville. A 22-year-old man from Mingo Junction was shot to death.
“The victim was never with the suspect,” Jefferson County Sherriff Fred Abdalla said. “He was at a party they had a few drinks, and when he was shot, he was outside one of the complexes and the suspect came right up to him and shot him."
It all went down around midnight.
Investigators say multiple shots were fired, and the majority of them hit their intended target.
Moments later, the shooter fled.
Some early confusion which led to a separate arrest, until ... “The individual that had been implicated as the shooter (Tuesday) night, we found out that he had a solid alibi and couldn't have been involved,” Abdalla said.
Officials said they were hot on his heels. And they believe they got their man early this morning. Despite the arrest, they still don't know what prompted the violence.
"Don't have a clue, not a clue,” Abdalla said. “Senseless. He was standing there on the sidewalk and another individual shot him in cold blood."
Abdalla isn't releasing the suspect’s name. He said he wants to conduct more interviews and learn more from the dozens of people who were in the area.
“I know there has to be someone out there that witnessed what transpired,” Abdalla said. “There has to be."
Abdalla said it is possible charges could be filed Thursday.
He also said he spoke with the victim's family Tuesday night, but he believes there are other relatives who have yet to receive the news, which is why he’s withholding the name of the victim.
Because of that he will not be releasing the name until he is sure they know.
As soon as more information becomes available we will pass that along to you
