JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – The village of Belvedere is a quiet place to live. Neighbors know neighbors, and for the most part everyone respects each other's property.
Early Thursday morning, something happened that changed how people look at the community.
Residents filed report after report after a rash of break-ins targeting vehicles – 18 in total -- throughout the area.
It’s criminal activity that isn't being ignored by the Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla.
“This had to be happening between 10 and the wee hours of the morning ... Characters going around and breaking into vehicles," Abdalla said.
He said the list of missing items is extensive.
“Anything taken, they figured they could get money for or exchange for drugs, cash, jewelry, firearms,” Abdalla said.
The whole area was hit, but what the Sherriff can't understand is why so many important things were left in the vehicles to begin with.
“You know we've got thieves all over the county, all over the country,” he said. “Why people want to leave valuables, why would you leave that in your car? I can't understand that. It's a shame that you'd have to keep things locked up but that's just the way it is today.
Some residents said their doors were unlocked. Others said windows were smashed out. One even claimed to find a brick in their car.
Abdalla said they are taking all the reports seriously and working to develop some leads in this case.
