JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio The primary election is a little more than a month away and Tuesday marked the beginning of absentee voting.
Thus, it was a busy day for the crew at the Jefferson County Board of Elections. They tested machines and starting the process of mailing out more than 1,500 absentee ballots for the upcoming election.
Each machine has so many precincts in our county, said Diane Gribble, director of the Jefferson County Board of Election.
In making sure each machine ready, they look at the optical scanners used for mail-in ballots. In the coming days, polling machines will get tested too.
This is happening behind the scenes as candidates try to capture attention.
We start to see the signs a month before the election, 35 days before the election, because of the early voting season starting, Gribble said. The candidates want to make sure they're getting the word out to those people who want to vote early.
On May 6, voters will have to tackle the primary ballots and zero in on everything from Governor to Attorney General, and of course, the local races.
Gribble said the one to watch is the judge's race for the court of common pleas.
It is the one that is opposed on the democratic ballot, Gribble said. There are three candidates. One of those candidates will then move forward to the general election.
Voters will also find an uncontested County Commissioner seat and a nomination for County Auditor.
While Board of Elections employees work out the kinks, they say you can prepare by checking out a sample ballot online.
You can get right on our website bring up your precinct and see what your ballot is going to look like so you can be more prepared for election day or before you come into early vote, Gribble said.
In addition to getting those absentee ballots out in the mail, they'll have extended hours at the Board of Elections every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. so early voting can be done.
