Allegations of illegal gambling lead to a crackdown in Jefferson County

Updated: Wednesday, May 21 2014, 05:08 PM EDT

Allegations of illegal gambling lead to a crackdown on eight different locations throughout Steubenville and Jefferson County.

On Friday members of the Steubenville Police Department along with agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation executed the search warrants

These were book making operations sports betting operations.

Just one simple sentence explained the reason why so many investigators had so much evidence on the move.

Evidence that was taken from a number of different locations, six in Steubenville, one in Bloomingdale, and one in Jefferson County.

Investigators say the crackdown was initiated by the Steubenville Police Department.

"We received a request from Steubenville PD in September 2013 to look into gambling in the Steubenville - Jefferson County area," Said Jamies Ciotti, Special Agent Supervisor, Ohio BCI.

"We've always known about the illegal gambling in Steubenville. Most citizens know about it - it's all over. It takes a joint effort -BCI doing such a large scale operation," said Chief Bill McCafferty, Steubenville Police Department.

That operation, which we still know little about, will result in some serious charges.

"The owners of the establishments - and the charges they could face pattern of corrupt activity, money laundering, and gambling," said Ciotti.

On Friday night we got a glimpse of the evidence, too much money to count, along with betting slips.

"This is a lot of money. This is a significant amount. Everybody thinks gambling is a victimless crime it really isn't - how many kids didn't get to eat because dad was betting," said Ciotti.

You saw how much money was there - it's a significant amount - if that money was properly in circulation the taxes could have hired four policemen at least," said McCafferty.

Officials said this is all part of an ongoing investigation.

Investigators tell news nine that it will take some time to put the evidence together that they gathered and to hand down any punishment
