Updated: Saturday, April 26 2014, 06:40 PM EDT

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio - Saturday is Comcast Cares Day. For the past 13 years, the company has picked a nonprofit organization to help and this year Comcast chose the Jefferson County Humane Society.

Comcast Cares Day is a nationwide event that the company hosts for nonprofit organizations.

P.J. Mercer, a cable technician at Comast, says they wanted to choose the Jefferson County Humane Society this year. Comcast and the humane society teamed up to give the animal shelter a little tender love and care.

“This year was the year for Ohio, so I wanted to get out here and help them out here,” Mercer said."

President of the humane society, Sally Wehr, said around 150 volunteers showed up Saturday to plant trees, clean the facility, and re-paint the community room and lobby areas.

“I'm very pleased of the turnout and the community support for it here at the shelter has been fantastic,” Wehr said.

Comcast will also make a monetary donation for every volunteer who showed up to help.

"I've got to walk a dog and we have been doing so many nice things for this place,” Wintersville resident Kaelin Hayes said. “I really love it and it’s just like people are helping out with everything, and painting and doing everything they can do help the shelter.
