Council set to vote on rental ordinances

Updated: Tuesday, July 8 2014, 08:22 AM EDT

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio- Steubenville's planning and zoning commission held a public meeting Monday night regarding two proposed rental ordinances.

The first ordinance deals with property owner registration and fees along with rental unit mandatory inspections. The second ordinance allows residents to petition to establish a neighborhood conservation district to restrict future rental use of a single-family detached home.
Commission agreed to send a positive recommendation to Steubenville City Council to vote on Tuesday night.

"It takes those circumstances when the mandatory inspection requires and formalizes the process and basically gets us to inspect more than just the exterior. Under the current property maintenance code only whats visible from the public way. Not permitted to go on private property. This expands on that," Urban Project Director Chris Petrossi said.

Officials say the mandatory inspection applies under certain circumstances, one being if 2 or more notices to comply with the property maintenance codes have been issued within any 2-year period.
