IRONDALE, Ohio --

Officials are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a Jefferson County home Tuesday morning.

The homeowner, Charles Crawford, was the only one in his Irondale home this morning when the blaze started.

Crawford told NEWS9 he was making breakfast and had a pan of grease on the stove. He sat down in another room to eat when he heard the fire alarm go off.

Shortly after 9 a.m., smoke was billowing from the two-story brick home at 33 Broadway St. Several crews responded to the blaze, including Irondale, Stratton, Wellsville, Empire and Highlandtown volunteer fire departments.

Crawford said he’s lived in the home for about 30 years and just recently put on a new roof. His cousin, his father and his son all live nearby, so Crawford will have family to stay with. The Red Cross is also assisting.

“He’s a really nice guy – does everything for everybody. He’s lived here since he was 18 years old. It’s a shame. He lost everything… he lost everything,” his cousin, Linda Crawford, said.

Crews said it does appear that the fire started in the kitchen, but the exact cause had not been determined as of Tuesday afternoon.
