JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio - Pleasant Hills Elementary School may have closed its doors after last school year but a local church group has plans to keep the building an integral part of the community.

The Bell Chapel Methodist Church bought the school in September and now, three months after the purchase, their work isn't quite done and the final product isn't complete.

However, at an open house held this weekend, they're hoping for input from the community on a facility for the community.

The building, one that the community identified with, added to the allure.

"Well, it's essential really because you want folks to be a part of it," said the Rev. Jeff Proya, of Bell Chapel United Methodist Church. "This is their center, and so that's why we're looking for ideas, We're looking for opportunities to serve them."

The open house on Sunday will also be the site of a performance by the youth group. Youth directors hope it will serve as a platform to springboard a Christian theater program.

"It's an amazing thing for all of the kids. We're all so excited to have all the space that we need," Youth Director Shannon Daugherty said. "And not just for the kids to be kids, but also that we could help them and branch out the community as well."

But the new community center is not just solely for the youth. Proya also envisions a senior service center to provide seniors a place of their own.

"We thought that we'd utilize part of the space as a senior center and part of a space, the portable classrooms, as a youth center for younger youth and for the older youth," Proya said.

Proya said he hopes that the center will host food distribution for needy families in the area.
