Funds secured in Jefferson County to train future Oil

Updated: Thursday, June 26 2014, 06:50 PM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio - Nearly $1 million was approved to by Jefferson County leaders to provide training for people to go to work in the Oil & Gas industry Thursday at the County Commissioners meeting.
"We hear that the Oil & Gas industry seems to be blooming all around us," said Barbara West, CEO of the Jefferson County Community Action Council. "It's coming into Jefferson County now. We are seeing the effects of it. (These) funds provide for WIA (Workforce Investment Act), and allow us to provide training, work experience type opportunities for people in Jefferson County."
They're putting $788,000 up to train more than 100 future Oil & gas workers. It's a statewide Rapid Response Project.
"That's a real important thing for the area," County Commissioner Dave Maple said. "To fund those dislocated workers, try to get them re-trained, re-educated in different types of employment."
Getting people into the job market and off of public assistance is the goal.
"Right now, we are training persons to get their CDL and have the equipment operating license," West said. "If persons get those licenses, go through the training, they can get a job in a very quick amount of time."
