Investigation into fatal Steubenville fire in state Fire Marshal’s hands

Updated: Wednesday, June 25 2014, 06:31 PM EDT
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The medial examination of Townya Metheny, the victim of a house fire on Sunday morning, has been completed. They say the 29-year-old Metheny lost her life due to an anoxic brain injury caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Now the attention shifts to that fire investigation. What caused the fire? And what are investigators doing to learn more about it?
"From the time we received the call to the time she was being treated was probably 7 minutes,” Chief Carlo Capaldi of the Steubenville Fire Department said. “So there isn't much anyone could have done to get there any quicker."
Officials from the state Fire Marshal's Office says they are working on it, but as of Wednesday, the cause remains undetermined.
City investigators said there were working smoke detectors.
"We believe the fire started on the first floor of the structure, most likely in the living room toward the front of the structure,” Capaldi said. “The cause is under investigation. At this time, there is no information on that yet from the state Fire Marshal's Office."
Capaldi said his investigators did look through the home, but couldn't find anything that would suggest anything one way or the other.
Officials with the state Fire Marshal's Office will be examining items they have removed from the home, and expect results within the next few months.
