JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio - The county court system has been in place since the 1960's and in Jefferson County, one man has served the court since its first day.

Arthur "Bud" Michael began as a bailiff when he was 33 years old. Now in his 80s, Michael entered the courtroom one last time Thursday, but was met with an unexpected surprise.

"They let me in and said well you have to go to the judge's chamber. I thought, 'Well, something is up. I don't know what's happening here but someone is pulling a dirty trick on me,'" Michael said.

Little did he know, it was those closest to him that were pulling the prank.

"I've been up here 48 years, but my wife has never come to court with me," Michael said. "So she didn't know what I did. She said, 'I want to go up and see what you do'"

Michael and Judge Joseph Corabi have served together for 23 years and their relationship has blossomed into more than a judge and bailiff.

"The guy has been just a tribute to this county court," Corabi said. "He's a wonderful person, a good father, a good husband, a good grandfather, but most of all a good friend."

Working with every judge since 1965, each has been unique. However, the bond forged between Corabi and Michael is something that takes years to build and lasts a lifetime.

"I can almost tell what he's going to ask me to do, and I'm always half a step ahead of him. I know what he needs, I know what he wants," Michael said. "I really was honored to serve for Judge Corabi"
