Ma'Lik Richmond released from juvenile detention facility

Updated: Monday, January 6 2014, 01:08 PM EST

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Sources have confirmed for NEWS9 that Ma'lik Richmond has been released from an Ohio juvenile detention facility.

The release came after the first of the year.

In March of 2013 Richmond, along with fellow student athlete Trent Mays, were convicted of raping a then 16-year-old girl in August of 2012.

For the crime Richmond was sentenced to one year in the juvenile detention system and Mays who was convicted of an additional charge received two years.

During a sexual classification hearing back in August of 2012, Judge Thomas Lipps classified Richmond as a tier 2 sex offender.

The ruling means Richmond will be required to register every six months for the next 20 years - but he can request to have the classification removed based on his rehabilitation.

Shortly after we learned news of his release we reached out to NEWS9 legal analyst Mike Nogay for analysis.

The statement reads:

"Unlike the adult criminal system where the focus is often punishment, the primary purposes of the juvenile justice system are the treatment and rehabilitation back into society of juvenile offenders. Judge Lipps made specific findings at the time of sentencing as to how court hoped to accomplish these goals with respect to each of the juvenile defendants."
