JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio --

A man accused of stealing religious items from Franciscan University was one of several people arraigned Wednesday after being indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury.

Kirk Singleton is charged with one count of theft and one count of receiving stolen property.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said the charge stems from incidents in May 2013 during which Singleton allegedly stole expensive items from the university and tried to sell them.

"They were pieces of religious material that were stored at the university and then taken, and obviously very special artifacts and pieces of religious material which the university holds very dear which also happened to be very expensive as well," Hanlin said.

Singleton posted a $5,000 bond in October and remains out of jail until his case goes to trial. A date for that has not yet been set.
